Jason Pietsch | Head Coach

Coach Pietsch has over 25 years of basketball experience as a player and coach.  Starting his playing days at La Mirada High School, coach moved on to play at Cerritos College, Sonoma State University and Cal Poly Pomona.  Graduating from Cal Poly in 1996, Coach Pietsch was hired at his high school alma mater as a teacher, JV boys basketball coach and varsity assistant coach.  After serving in that capacity for three years, coach took over the Matadores program.  In 2002, Coach Pietsch was hired at Esperanza High School and served as the head boys basketball coach for the past eight years.  In 2010, Coach Pietsch transferred to Yorba Linda High School where he teaches biology and serves a dual role as varsity girls assistant and head JV girls coach.  Coach Pietsch lives in Placentia with his wife Holly and their four children...Jaly, Abby, Ellie and Kobe.

Dean Ackland | Assistant Varsity Coach

Joining Coach Pietsch is his former college coach Dean Ackland.  Coach Ackland brings forty years of experience at the High School and College level.  He won a CIF basketball title while at Downey High School and was part of four State Basketball Championships at Cerritos College.  He lives in Yorba Linda with his wife Denise and has three children and three grandchildren.

Bryan Bloom | Junior Varsity Coach

Coach Bloom has had a passion for basketball most of his life. He played on numerous teams as a youth until a serious knee injury ended his playing career. After the injury, his coaching career commenced at the junior high and high school levels for many years.

Coach Bloom is a science teacher at Yorba Linda High School and had the privilege to be offered a coaching position on the basketball staff by Head Coach Nate Call.

Coach Bloom graduated with highest honors from Mater Dei High School. He afterward finished an undergraduate degree from Cal State Fullerton with highest honors. He went on to Azusa Pacific University for post graduate work and received a Masters of Arts in Education and a Masters of Arts in Administration.

Coach Bloom married his wonderful wife seven years ago and they have three children. When he is not coaching basketball, he loves to spend time with his family and watch sports. He is very proud to be a Mustang and loves his students and his players.

Coach Lloyd Walls | Assistant Junior Varsity Coach

This will be Lloyd Walls’ 6th year as a coach, but his first as a Mustang. Coach Walls brings over 20 years of experience with him having played for Esperanza before beginning his college career. After 2 years at Irvine Valley College, Walls earned a scholarship and played at Wright State in Ohio before coming home to finish out at Cal State Fullerton. He played for a year with Lithuanian team “The Strikers,” then returned home and became a teacher and coach. Coach Walls lives in Brea with his wife and looks forward to an exciting and successful year with the Mustangs.

Billy Gary | Sophomore Coach

Coach Gary returns to coaching high school basketball after 8 seasons of coaching youth basketball and spending time with his family.  Coach Gary was a Varsity Assistant and Freshman Coach at Corona High where he presently teaches World History, Psychology and A.P. Psychology. Coach Gary is a graduate of UCLA and lives in Yorba Linda with his wife Erin and their three children…Matthew, Ryan and Katie.

Coach Chris Hobson| Freshman Coach

Coach Hobson grew up in Overland Park, Kansas where he played prep basketball before attending the University of Kansas, earning his bachelor degree in Communication Studies.  Coach Hobson has coached at Esperanza the past four years and is currently serving as the Assistant Head Coach for the University of La Verne Men's Basketball team.  He also coaches camps at UC-Riverside, provides intense individual training and continues to help with the summer camps and academies through Full Court Basketball School.  Coach Hobson is looking to become a head coach at the college level and will continue to bring his enthusiasm and energy to our program all year round.
